One lens, a gradient of power
A standard reader has a single magnification across the whole lens. A graduated multifocal changes power smoothly from top to bottom: near-neutral at the top, intermediate through the middle, full reading power at the bottom. There is no visible line because the change is continuous rather than a segment bonded into the glass.
The three working zones
- Bottom — books, phones, labels and menus at roughly 30–40 cm
- Middle — laptop and desktop screens at roughly 50–70 cm
- Top — near-neutral, so a room or a face across the table looks natural
Why you move your head
Because the zones are stacked vertically, you select one by changing the angle your eyes pass through the lens. Chin down slightly for print, level for a screen, chin up to look across a room. Within a few days this is unconscious. It is also why the glasses need to sit properly on the bridge — worn low, the reading zone ends up above your line of sight.
The trade-off nobody advertises
Progressive optics compress a lot of correction into a small area, so the far edges of the lens are softer than the centre. Optician-made progressives reduce this with a custom fit to your pupils; a non-prescription lens cannot. In practice it means a slightly narrower sweet spot, which most people stop noticing — and a few never get on with. That is what the 30-day guarantee is for.
Coatings and build
